Equilibrium

set and costume design for film

equilibrium was a speculative film design. it encompassed the design of an entire world. the story is one of illicit love, unground revolutionaries and of saving the world from evil.

Two models were made, one for the revolutionary lair that is housed under the subway in the city so as to stay secret, and one for the office of the tyrant that rules the city.

The revolutionary lair was inspired by old archives and spaces that reuses unwanted items - for example a door placed on top of boxes to be used as a table. Dramatic lighting effects could be attained through the subway grate over the table where all the plans were laid out, as well as the rows and rows of archived files and the narrow hallway that leads into the lair. All enhance the secretive and make-do nature of the revolutionaries.

the design for the office of the tyrant was inspired by fascist architecture and roman colosseums and arenas - it is evokes power, mind-games and manipulation.

The costume design was for the female protagonist who is arrested for breaking strict rules around displaying emotions. I decided to dress her in painted and embroidered denim to reflect her make-do and hardwearing nature. she memorialises her family and the past by painting and embroidering on her clothes, they then remind her that she needs to keep fighting for emotional and artistic freedom.
