Animal farm was a speculative design project for the lyric hammersmith. the proposal included a mixture of manure and clay-rich earth to be used as the floor of the set to transport the audience into the farmyard via their noses as smell is the strongest sense we have in eliciting memories and place.
the set was inspired by building sites and places that were still in the process of becoming something - much like the society that is being created in animal farm. The costumes were all created around the simple idea of the boiler-suit as working uniform with each animal group getting different takes on it. for example the pigs are wearing shirts and ties under their boiler-suits that get revealed over the course of them becoming more authoritarian. the chickens meanwhile had punk-like touches as they were the first animals on the farm to rebel.
